God Is Self-Existent: Why You Can Trust Him

God Is Eternal and Uncreated
Isaiah 44:6 declares:“I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god.”Before anything was created, God already existed. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit eternally existed in perfect fullness and fellowship. God did not come into existence, and He does not depend upon creation for anything.Psalm 90:2 says:
“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.”Human beings are creatures who exist within time and depend upon God for every breath. God is altogether different. He is the eternal Creator who holds all things together and depends upon nothing outside Himself.
The Biblical God Is Not the God of New Age Spirituality
Before coming to Christ, Doreen was immersed in New Age and New Thought beliefs. Within those systems, God was often described as an impersonal mind, intelligence, consciousness, or force.New Age spirituality also commonly teaches forms of non-duality, suggesting that human beings are not truly separate from God and that recognizing oneself as part of the divine is a higher form of spiritual enlightenment.Scripture teaches something entirely different.God is the Creator, and we are His creatures. He is not an impersonal force, and human beings are not extensions of God. The distinction between the Creator and His creation is fundamental to a biblical worldview.Coming out of spiritual deception therefore requires more than abandoning certain practices. Christians must continually renew their understanding of God through His Word.God’s Thoughts Are Higher Than Ours
Isaiah 55:8–9 says:“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”God is not simply a greater or more perfect version of the human mind. His knowledge is infinite and perfect. He sees what we cannot see, knows what we cannot know, and understands every circumstance completely.This truth has enormous implications for prayer.Christians should bring their needs, fears, desires, and concerns honestly before God. Yet prayer is not an opportunity to give God a script for how He must answer us. Because His wisdom exceeds ours, we can trust that His timing and purposes are perfect even when His answers differ from our expectations.
Trusting God When Life Feels Uncertain
God’s self-existence provides stability when everything around us feels fragile.Our circumstances change. Our emotions change. Relationships change. Health changes. Plans fail, people disappoint us, and the future can feel uncertain.God does not change.Because He is eternal, sovereign, wise, and self-existent, nothing threatens His existence or frustrates His purposes. The Christian therefore does not have to carry the weight of the world alone.God may allow suffering and trials in our lives, but He remains with His people in the midst of them. He gives comfort, strength, wisdom, and grace to endure.Learning to Trust Instead of Control
One of the great temptations in both New Age spirituality and ordinary human life is the desire for control. Astrology, tarot cards, numerology, divination, and similar practices often appeal to people because they promise knowledge, direction, or control over an uncertain future.The Christian life calls us in the opposite direction.Rather than attempting to control the future, believers are called to trust the God who already knows it.Proverbs 3:5 says:“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.”We do not need to understand everything God is doing before we can trust Him. Our confidence rests not in our ability to predict what comes next but in the character of the One who holds the future.
Knowing God Through His Word
Learning to trust God begins with learning who He is.Doreen explains that when she first became a Christian, trusting God was difficult because she had spent years placing her confidence in astrology, tarot cards, angel cards, numerology, spiritual experiences, and her own feelings.Scripture replaced those shifting foundations with the truth of God’s character.The more believers immerse themselves in the Bible, the more clearly they understand who God is. Daily Bible reading, prayer, fellowship with other Christians, and sitting under faithful biblical teaching help Christians grow in their knowledge of God and therefore in their trust in Him.Bring Your Burdens to God
Some people have learned through painful experiences that trusting others can feel dangerous. Abuse, abandonment, betrayal, disappointment, and broken relationships can leave people believing they must carry everything themselves.But God is not like sinful human beings.He invites His children to bring their burdens to Him in prayer. Christians can tell Him their fears, worries, needs, confusion, and sorrow. He already knows them completely, yet He lovingly calls His people to seek Him.We do not have to be spiritually self-sufficient. We were never designed to be.God is sovereign. God is wise. God is faithful. And because God needs nothing, we can confidently acknowledge how completely we need Him.Reflection Question
