Introduction
Welcome back to Warriors of Grace. My name is Dave Jenkins, and I’m thankful to be with you today. We are continuing our series “Challenges Men Face Today.” We’ve looked at lust, passivity, anger, fear, technology, success, fatherhood, brotherhood, and contentment. Today, we turn to one of the most dangerous sins that hides in every man’s heart, pride, and the grace of humility that God provides in Christ.
Scripture Foundation – Philippians 2:3–8
“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”
The Problem of Pride
- Pride whispers, “I know better than God.”
- Pride makes us self-sufficient, unwilling to admit weakness or need.
- Pride leads to comparison, boasting, and a critical spirit.
Pride destroys relationships, poisons leadership, and blinds us to grace. Proverbs 16:18 warns us, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”
The Beauty of Humility
- Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it’s thinking of yourself less.
- Humility is grounded in Christ, who took the form of a servant.
- Humility trusts God’s wisdom instead of insisting on our own way.
At the cross, Jesus humbled Himself to the lowest place, so that we might be lifted up by His grace.
Cultivating Humility
- A right view of God: His holiness and greatness.
- A right view of ourselves: sinners saved by grace.
- Serving others with joy and sacrifice.
Humility flows out of worship, as we see who God is and who we are in light of Him.
Practical Steps for Men of Grace
- Confess Pride – regularly repent of prideful thoughts and actions.
- Serve Quietly – bless others without seeking praise.
- Listen Well – value the insight and perspective of others.
- Practice Gratitude – pride withers where gratitude grows.
- Fix Your Eyes on Christ – meditate on His humility daily.
Application
Brothers, pride tells us we must be in control, always right, always recognized. Humility says, “Christ is Lord, and I am His servant.” Jesus humbled Himself to the point of death for you. You are free to lay down your pride and live for His glory.
Conclusion
The path of pride leads to destruction, but the path of humility leads to Christlikeness. Next time on Warriors of Grace, we’ll look at Fighting Discouragement and Depression.
