Standing Firm in the Truth: Why Christians Must Anchor Their Lives in God’s Word
By Dave Jenkins
📖 Scripture for Life
We are not merely in a culture war—we are in a truth war.
We live in a world where truth is often treated as optional. But for the Christian, truth is not a cultural construct—it’s a divine revelation. In this moment of confusion, the need for doctrinal clarity and biblical courage has never been greater. That’s why now, more than ever, we must know what God’s Word says—and we must stand upon it without apology.
Know the Word to Stand Against Error
If we are going to stand against the errors of our day, we must first know what God’s Word says. This isn’t optional. It’s foundational.
Christians are called to be people of the Book—anchored in truth, not drifting with the cultural currents. The Bible is not a tool for theological hobbyists; it’s the revealed Word of the living God, breathed out and profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness:
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).
And yet, biblical illiteracy is rampant in the church today. People may know inspirational quotes or coffee-mug verses, but they don’t know the storyline of Scripture, the doctrine of Christ, or the commands of God.
Rooted in the Rock of Scripture
If we hope to roll back the rising tide of confusion—like waves crashing against the rocks—we must be rooted in the unchanging truth of Scripture.
Culture shifts. Trends fade. False teaching mutates. But the Word of God stands forever:
“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever” (Isaiah 40:8).
When believers are grounded in the Word, they’re not tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine:
“…so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine” (Ephesians 4:14).
Rooted in Scripture, we don’t stand on opinion or preference—we stand on revelation.
Standing on the Foundation of God’s Word
To resist the spread of biblical, theological, and worldview illiteracy, we must stand firmly on the foundation of God’s Word.
This requires more than simply owning a Bible or attending a church. It demands consistent study, Spirit-empowered obedience, and a love for truth that runs deeper than convenience or comfort.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105).
Parents need to catechize their children. Pastors must feed their people with the whole counsel of God. Every Christian must grow in their understanding of biblical theology and be equipped to engage a world that increasingly calls evil good and good evil (Isaiah 5:20).
“Now these Jews were more noble… they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily…” (Acts 17:11).
Bold Preaching, Loud Love, and Clear Proclamation
If we long to see a generation delivered from deception, error, and heresy, then we must preach boldly, love loudly, and proclaim Christ clearly—through the Word of God alone.
There’s no room for timid pulpits or half-hearted witness. We need courage—not the kind rooted in personality or popularity, but the kind born from conviction and shaped by the cross.
“Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching” (2 Timothy 4:2).
We must preach the Word, calling sinners to repentance, building up the saints, and exalting Jesus Christ as Lord. And we must do so with love—not sentimental love that softens the edges of truth, but holy love that speaks the truth with grace and clarity:
“Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth” (John 17:17).
“Discernment is not knowing the difference between right and wrong. It is knowing the difference between right and almost right.” — Charles Spurgeon

Addressing a Common Objection
“Isn’t doctrine divisive?”
Only when it’s distorted. True doctrine leads to unity in Christ, not division. The truth is not the enemy of love—it’s the foundation of it:
“Speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ” (Ephesians 4:15).
For Pastors and Leaders
Your people are being catechized—by the world or by the Word. Preach sound doctrine. Equip the saints. Raise up disciples grounded in truth.
