Why did Adonijah’s plan to become king fail?

Adonijah exalted himself and attempted to seize power without David’s blessing or God’s direction. His plan failed because God had already appointed Solomon to reign, and through the intervention of Nathan and Bathsheba, David upheld that divine calling.

What does Solomon’s response to Adonijah reveal about his leadership?

Solomon’s decision to show mercy—while still warning Adonijah—demonstrates early signs of wise and just leadership. His restraint and grace point forward to the greater King, Jesus, who rules with both justice and compassion.

How does 1 Kings 1 point us to Christ?

Solomon’s anointing as the true king chosen by God foreshadows the greater Son of David—Jesus Christ—who was appointed by the Father and exalted in humility. Unlike Adonijah, Jesus did not grasp for power but was raised up in righteousness.
