Spiritual Disciplines for Busy Men

I’ve been a Christian for almost all of my life—35 years—and yet when I see the word “Spiritual disciplines,” I cringe inwardly. Part of this discomfort is my own sinful tendency. I am, as the songwriter says, “Prone to wander.” The other part of my discomfort, however, stems from a misunderstanding of what it means to walk with God. We see some who are better off than us, and we feel bad.  On the contrary, when our glance finds someone worse off than us, our self-image increases. But what if life was not meant to be lived in comparison with each other but rather in a simple journey of growth and development, a journey that certainly has more...

Batting With the Bereans

One of the most exciting elements of spring is the beginning of baseball season. The outfield is mowed, the infield freshly groomed and the players make their way onto the field. Some players come prepared to play; others have managed to let the training program go by the wayside. Eventually, all the players get back in shape and are ready to go, come opening day. The Christian life, however, does not have the luxury of an off-season. Each day presents a new challenge. And each obstacle allows for Christians to be God-centered in word and deed. The Scriptures present...
