Growth in the Gospel

Why is it important for the Christian to grow in understanding of the Gospel? The Gospel is not an object; it is foundational to our growth in Christ. The Gospel is not a message of self-esteem, improvement, or prosperity. Scripture teaches us: The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; who can understand it (Jer 17:9)? And you were dead in your trespasses and sins … and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest (Eph 2:1, 3). There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one (Rom3:10-12). What Scripturally is essential in our sharing the Gospel? 1) You are a slave to sin. And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest (Eph 2:1-3; cf. Col 2:13). He who believes in the Son has eternal...

Burning the Quran, 9/11 and Islam

Like many Americans, I remember where I was on September 11, 2001. A friend and I had spent the night outside in his tent, and his dad had come outside to let us know that the World Trade Center had been hit by an airplane. At first I didn’t believe my friend’s dad, so I ran into the family room to watch the television. The television channel replayed the airplane crashing into the Twin Towers time and time again. I still remember feeling very sad to the point of tears for the loss of life and the destruction those men had done. September 11, 2010 marks the nine year anniversary of the tragic events of September 11th, 2001. September 11th, 2001 is a day that will live in infamy among Americans for as long as America is a country. It is a day every American and even those who aren’t Americans will remember. It is a day a nation was attacked by terrorists and by members of Islam who want nothing more than to destroy this nation. Terrorists have harmed America before the events of September 11th, and they have attempted to attack America on her own soil and those who support her after September 11th. These terrorists claim to be Muslims. President Bush in one of his speeches proclaimed that Islam is a religion of peace. President Obama...

Revival, the Gospel and Glenn Beck

Recently there was a rally called “Restoring Honor” held in Washington D.C. on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. During the course of the rally one of the speakers called America to return to God. Much discussion is occurring about this rally throughout the blogosphere. It is not my intention in this blog post to enter into the fry and opine on politics or on the legitimacy of the rally but to point out that honor and integrity are not possibly character attributes apart from being explicitly tied to and grounded in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Apart from the framework of the Gospel- calls for “honor and integrity” are calls for a gospel of moralism that already pervades today’s culture. Just to be clear- calls for people to be honorable and act with integrity are important. The part of the rally that was unhelpful was the calling for ecumenical cooperation. This rally gathered religious leaders from several faith traditions on the stage to unite and work together for the common good of our country. The emphasis of this rally was on honor. There were many evangelical Pastors who stood on the stage at the Lincoln Memorial promising to unite with other members from other religions. Earlier I mentioned that this was unhelpful so allow me to qualify and quantify my statement. One of my main concerns with evangelical...
