Charles Spurgeon is rightly considered the prince of preachers. This is not just some title that someone gave him, but rather reflects the depth and quality of his work as a whole. Spurgeon was a Pastor who cared about people and wanted to see them become like Jesus. Spurgeon also knew that the only way that could happen is if people were transferred from the Kingdom of Satan to the Kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ. His book Advice for Seekers is helpful on this point because Christ came to give us the full depth of His abundant life to draw seekers unto Himself.Yet, for some of us that deeper and more meaningful relationship with Christ just doesn’t seem to happen. No matter how many books are read on improving our spiritual life or reading the Bible faithfully, or even by attending church regularly, we remain frustrated, unable to move forward or grow in our faith.
The question this book addresses is, “What stands in the way of our growth as Christians?” The answer Spurgeon gives is you. As a young man, Spurgeon questioned his own ability to surrender his life and will to God. This book records his reflections on removing the barriers we often place between our faith and God’s love. While many Christians people today are wrestling with the question of “how to grow” in the Christian life, Spurgeon in the 19th century knew that it was through the old paths that we grow—namely the path of the Gospel. Spurgeon knew that once Christ draws sinners to Himself in salvation they never outgrew their need for Christ but rather grew in their daily confidence in Christ by resting in Him.
Advice For Seekers is just as important a book as when it was first published. Every Christian needs to find the abundant life of Christ. Advice for Seekers would be a great book for the new Christian to learn to grow in the Christian life, or even for the seasoned Christian who seems to be stuck where they are in their Christian life. Wherever you are in your Christian journey, I encourage you to pick up this book by Spurgeon (along with the others he has written). His writing will bless you, and strengthen your faith in the glories of the Gospel of grace.
